Why You Should Have Been Mobile Yesterday.

Jan 03, 2019

The landscape of what the "internet" is and how users choose to access it changes on a nearly day-to-day basis.

This causes a lot of confusion / frustration for businesses on how they should prioritize resources to harness the internet.

Fortunately there's a near guaranteed solution to improve nearly all important aspects of using the internet in 2018. This includes improvement to SEO (Search Engine Optimization), user experience, and business reputation.

What is this magic bullet?

Mobile Friendly Websites.

As of April 2015, Google (essentially the architects of the modern day internet) updated their search engine algorithm to prioritize mobile friendly over non-mobile websites.

Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.[1]

"Cool story Kyle, but what does this mean to me?"

Let's look at an example: You search Google for "best burger in Columbus, Ohio"

Click the first few results and you'll notice that they look great on your mobile device of choice. As you go further down the list, you'll notice the quality of the mobile experience drops.

This is not an accident.

There are a number of different strategies that our SEO experts can help you with to grow your brand / business, but I can guarantee that one question that will be asked is:

"Is your website mobile-friendly?"

Now that you have a better idea on how mobile friendly websites improve your website on a technical level, let's talk about the next important thing.

User Experience:

The dictionary defines "User Experience" as:

noun

"the overall experience of a person using a product such as a website or computer application, especially in terms of how easy or pleasing it is to use."

Given that viewing a non-mobile website on a mobile device is considered a negative user experience, businesses without a mobile-friendly website are turning away nearly half of their potential customers. It is for this reason that it is critical for businesses to update their internet strategies to always keep their mobile customers in mind.

Generating a negative user experience not only hurts your business from a user's perspective but can have long term damaging effects on your business's brand.

Your business's reputation is important so it's necessary to be perceived as modern and relevant. One of the most telling ways a business can seen as obsolete is a non-mobile website. Google produces thousands of search results for every query so your potential customer isn't going to waste time pinch-zooming around your dated website. They'll simply hit the back button and move on to the next result. The first and only impression that customer will have of your business and brand is that it's antiquated.

It's 2018 and there's no end in sight for new iPhones and Android devices. That is why it is imperative that you adjust your business model to include mobile customers.

Do it for SEO. Do it for user experience. Do it for your business brand.

Do it because Google plans on putting your non-mobile website at the bottom of the pile.
